Choosing a dog leash

Today you can buy a dog leash or dog line in many different materials and lengths. Here we look closely at the most popular categories.

Dog leash in nylon
Many people prefer a dog leash in nylon rather than leather as a nylon leash is flexible and as the dog will be less inclined to gnaw into a dog leash made of nylon. The string can either be attached directly to the collar or be wrapped around the dog’s neck.

At a dog shelter the dogs will typically just be walked or moved using a short dog leash made of nylon that is put around the dog’s neck. A short nylon line is inexpensive and also works great for a walk where you want the best possible control over the dog.

Dog leash in leather
Others may prefer a dog leash in leather material as leather is soft and flexible with age. Therefore a dog leash made of leather will have less tendency to scrape against the dog’s skin. A dog leash in leather may also be nicer to hold on to and more gentle on your hands. Many may also prefer the feeling of quality that we associate with leather rather than nylon.

Dog lines with two handles
This type of dog leash is made with both a handle on the end and a grip further down so that you do not need to wrap the leash around your hand if you need to reduce the lines length. This can be uncomfortable for your hand if you have a dog who gets very excited and anxious for an example when meeting another dog that your dog pulls towards.

Training leash
If you want to start training your dog to walk nicely beside you and sit by your side when you stop, it might be a good idea to use a dog leash that is shorter than you might normally use for walks. This gives you more control over the dog. If you attach the line higher on the dog’s neck this will also give you more control over the dog. This will ensure that the dog can’t pull as easily as it could if the line was attached lower on the neck where the dog is most muscular and have the most capacity for pulling.

Flex Line
This type of dog line is built to automatically extend its length as the dog’s distance to you varies (you can also lock the line so the length stays the same). The lines length will of course also be reduced if the line is unlocked, when the dog is closer to you. Some prefer this type of dog line as it provides the dog with a lot of freedom on a walk. However a flex Line can’t be recommended for dogs that haven’t learned to walk nicely as the dog can suddenly pull the line in full before you have time to react to get to another dog or person.

What type of dog leash you choose or what material the leash is made of is all a matter of personal preference and the purpose that you want to use the leash for.
