You should brush your dog’s teeth once a month or more, and at the annual vet check.

Teeth accumulates tartar over the years, which occasionally must be cleaned away. If your dog has chew toys, this may counteract the development of tartar.

By following these three steps, you can accustom your dog to getting its teeth brushed:

1. It is important that your dog gets used to the process. Begin slowly by gently touching the nose and lifting up your dog’s lips so that teeth and gums appear. Over a few days you can then start using the dog’s mouth gently and begin with brushing your dog’s teeth gently with a finger.

2. Introduce the toothbrush and toothpaste. Always use an edible toothpaste specially made for dogs. Never use your own toothpaste. Put a little toothpaste on your finger and allow the dog to taste it. Then put a bit of toothpaste on your dog’s teeth and gums. When you can touch all of the teeth, you can put toothpaste on the toothbrush and start brushing both teeth and gums.

3. Now start brushing. Brush a growing number of teeth and work your way towards the canines. The dog’s mouth can remain closed as the accumulation of plaque mostly happens on the outside of the teeth.
